Penrith Music Cub’s next concert, on Monday November 20th at Penrith Methodist Church, features a well-established concert pianist. Martin Roscoe is a regular visitor to Penrith Music Club’s concert series, and brings to his latest recital for us the theme of dance, in a programme of some familiar classics by such as Chopin and Ravel, along with lesser known gems by Beethoven and Smetana and others.

Weber’s magical ‘Invitation to the Dance’ starts the ball. Although often more commonly heard as an orchestral piece it did originally start out as a virtuosic composition for piano. The German connection is maintained with Bach’s 6th French Suite, and Beethoven’s typically virtuosic ‘take’ on the polonaise. The German connection is completed by Schubert’s delightful set of German dances.

Ravel’s Valses Nobles et Sentimentales are characteristic of that composer’s luxuriant nostalgia, full of colour and beauty, after which we travel east with polkas by Smetana and Martinu. Szymanowski’s fantastic mazurkas, Opus 62, lead us back to the more familiar territory of Chopin’s mazurkas and polonaises. Altogether this concert is a tour de force, encompassing a typically wide range of music by this pianist of international renown.
