Castalian String Quartet

Monday 19th February 2018
7:30pm at the Penrith Methodist Church
Tickets: £16, at the door or in advance.

February’s concert in Penrith Music Club’s series features the Castalian Quartet, a young group of musicians with a rapidly growing reputation on the world stage. As well as prizes in Europe they were placed 3rd in the Banff (Canada) International competition, being the only European group to get to the finals. Along with a small number of exceptional musical talents, the quartet is sponsored by the Young Classical Artists Trust.

Their programme includes a late Haydn quartet, which contrasts with Dutilleux’s ‘Ainsi La Nuit’, a work which conjures up an impressive soundscape from just the four instruments, before reverting to the more classical Schumann in his 3rd and final string quartet, a work of typical harmonic twists and turns in an almost symphonic structure. The concert thus neatly spans music from 1796 to 1976.

The concert takes place, as usual, in Penrith Methodist Church at 7:30 p.m. on Monday 19th February. Tickets at £16 (students £2) are available from Lakeland Music, Beckside Books and the Tourist Information Centre in Penrith, or at the door.

Programme

String Quartet Op.76 No.5 Haydn
String Quartet ‘Ainsi la nuit’ Dutillleux
Third string quartet Schumann
