Arnold Sinfonietta No.1
Haydn Cello Concerto in C
Parry Lady Radnor's Suite
Haydn Symphony No.45 (Farewell)

The Music Club’s 75th season starts with another fine concert by the Northern Chamber Orchestra directed by Nicholas Ward and made possible by the Arts Council Orchestras Live scheme.

Malcolm Arnold’s Sinfonietta no.1 reveals his appealing lyrical talent as well as his bubbling rhythmical friskiness – a great way to launch our concert series. The distinguished cellist Raphael Wallfisch first performed for the Music Club in 1980; for his fifth appearance in Penrith he will perform the Haydn C major Cello concerto, an elegant and sunny piece only unearthed in 1961 after nearly two centuries in oblivion – an invaluable addition to the cello repertoire.

Hubert Parry (1848-1918) was a  major force in English music as composer, conductor and administrator;  his charming Lady Radnor’s Suite for strings is a worthy reminder of his talent. Finally Haydn’s Symphony no.45 (Farewell) reminds us of his concern for his orchestral players, marooned in 1772 at Eisenstadt and too long separated from their families in Vienna. Haydn bravely makes the political point in the finale as players slope off one by one – a successful ploy as his Esterhazy employer took the hint!
